Magnetic recording on patterned media prepared by ion beam irradiation

Ion irradiation is a suitable technique to change locally the properties of magnetic materials [1] [2]. It can be used to fabricate patterned elements, where hard magnetic islands are separated by non magnetic or soft magnetic phases. In patterned media, bit recording can be affected by the exchange field and demagnetizing field from neighboring grains. This may lead to undesired writing of adjacent bits.
