A practical measurement method for the Back ElectroMotive Force (BEMF) coefficients of Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs) is addressed in this paper. Unlike the Permanent Magnet (PM) motors, the BEMF constant is not well defined in SRMs[1]. Instead, the term BEMF coefficient is adopted for SRMs. This coefficient is important for the design of the DC bus voltage in SRM drivers and the power device voltage rating in Switched Reluctance Generator (SRG) post-regulators [2]. There is lack of a simple and direct measurement method for BEMF coefficients of SRMs and the measurement of this parameter cannot be performed without external excitation due to the permanent magnet free construction[1]. The challenge in the proposed measurement method is to provide excitation and measure the BEMF coefficient simultaneously in the same motor winding. A novel double excitation measurement method is proposed and the BEMF coefficient parameter can be obtained directly without performing any differentiation and integration operation.
