Rotational Loss Characterization using Finite Element Analysis

The rotational losses of non-oriented soft magnetic materials as used in cores of rotating electrical machinery can be estimated using modern FEA tools combined with hysteresis data measured under pure sinusoidal excitation. This substantially reduces the materials characterization activity required to adequately simulate operating performance of advanced electric machines, as rotational loss measurements are difficult. Knowledge of rotational loss is useful in predicting a machine's thermal environment and in optimizing efficiency through machine design. This paper expands on previous FEA analyses of rotational loss by examining a large frequency range for two different soft magnetic materials.
