The beam pumping units driven by induction motor are widely used because of simple construction, high reliability, convenient maintenance, but they have a big disadvantage of low efficiency. Numerous methods for improving the motor efficiency, such as high slip induction motor, double power induction motor, linear motor, permanent magnet synchronous motor etc. Among these methods, adopting permanent magnet synchronous motor and linear motor are prevalent. Combined the advantages of these two motors, this paper developed a high torque, low speed disc-type permanent linear synchronous motor (DPLSM) to instead of induction motor.
