Magnetic superlattices such as (Co/Pd){sub}N have been considered for applications in patterned medium recording, the technology that holds a promise to advance magnetic recording beyond the areal bit densities achievable with conventional magnetic recording schemes. The multilayers are characterized by large magnetic anisotropy and are suitable for ultra-high density recording application beyond the limits of conventional CoCr alloys. In retrospect, it is worthwhile noting that it took many years of extensive research and development to arrive to CoCr alloys used in today's media. To successfully transition to new materials systems, efficient materials optimization pathways are desirable to facilitate the accelerated development cycle.
