THE ACOUSTICS OF THE RENOVATED AUDITORIUM OF THE PRODUCTION CENTRE OF THE ITALIAN RADIO AND TELEVISION (RAI) IN NAPLES (ITALY)

The Auditorium of the Production Centre of RAI in Naples (Italy) was opened on March 29, 1963. RAI is the public Italian Radio and Television Broadcasting Company. The Auditorium was designed as a multipurpose studio suitable also for the performance of various genres of music, classical and symphonic included. In the middle of the nineties the production management discontinued the concert activities and the Auditorium was adapted to the sole function of studio for staging fictions to be broadcast. This implied some changes in the hall, e.g. the dismounting of about half the number of seats on the stage side and the fitting of the set. On September 2004 the management of RAI banned a competition for the renovation of the Auditorium in order to comply with new regulations, to make technical renovations and to restyle the hall to recover the original concert-hall acoustics, or better if possible. The DETEC, the University Department which the authors are affiliated to, was involved in the consultancy for acoustics. This paper reports the main acoustic aspects dealt with and some measurement results concerning the use of the Auditorium as a concert hall.
