Modal Choices for Metropolitan Cities - Experiences and Best Practices in Western Australia

The decision on what mode of public transport to select for a particular corridor can be influenced by a wide range of factors. At the low end of the transport task, public transport services are typically provided by community buses or some form of low frequency public transport bus service. However as decisions on mode selection become more substantive, for example when investments in infrastructure are required, the factors that can affect the modal decision become more complex and varied. In this paper I will examine decisions over the last eight to ten years about mode selection on a major corridor in Perth, Australia. I will contrast how decision making factors influenced the selection of a new rail transit corridor, and contrast this to decisions in Brisbane, Australia, where a series of busways has developed also over the last eight to ten years.
