As offshore oilfield developments move into ever more demanding environments, polymeric materials are being asked to function under increasingly severe operating conditions. This represents a challenge for both the materials themselves, and for the design and test procedures which are used to verify the capability of a given technology to perform,as required, over the life of a field. This paper will illustrate some of the demands which operators are now placing on a range of polymeric materials in offshore applications, and explain how a more detailed knowledge of the performance of materials is enabling appropriate design, and safe and reliable operation.
