Carbonate rocks in the Volga-Ural region were predominantly formed in Late Devonian (approx 370 - 350 Ma), Carboniferous (approx 350 - 300 Ma) and Permian (approx 300 - 250 Ma) periods, controlled by large scale degradation of the marine sedimentation. Comparatively low burial depth of these rocks supported most of the primary characteristics of the rock-forming carbonates and associated organic matter.
