High-Throughput Casting Technology - Challenges and Solutions

SMS group received an order from Steel Dynamics Inc. for the Sinton, Texas, USA, single-strand high-production plant, having an annual capacity of 2.7 million metric tons (3 million short tons). With a casting thickness of 130 mm. the required higher throughput is given and the production of thicker API grades becomes possible. Challenges for the subsequent high throughputs will be the steel flow control in the mold, minimization of bulging and the establishment of a uniform solidification in the strand guide. The continuous casting plant concept, with an overview of the technological highlights, will be presented.
