Wustite (Fe_xO) is an important composition in iron ore reduction or slag formation during the iron-making process, as a result it is necessary to prepare wusitite first before focusing attention on its or related slag's properties. In this work, two different kinds of methods, namely decomposition of hydrous ferrous oxalate (DHFO) and redox between ferric oxide and iron (RFOI), to produce the wustite under different experimental conditions are studied and discussed. The results show that in addition to wustite, the products of DHFO include metallic iron while that of RFOI includes Fe_3O_4 or even Fe_2O_3. Based on XRD analysis, x of wustite in the former method is above 0.930 but below 0.930 in latter one. Meanwhile, the increasing temperature declines x of wustite in DHFO, but that in RFOI increases, x of wustite in both methods are sensitive to temperature. On the other hand, when the time is prolonged to 60 min, x of wustite in DHFO showed a rising trend, while that in RFOI gradually decreases.
