Duplex stainless steels (DSSs) are dual phase alloys with similar balance of volume fractions of austenite (y) and ferrite (a) are desirable to obtain better corrosion resistance and higher mechanical strength than standard austenitic stainless steels. DSS has a range of applications, like marine, chemical, oil and gas industries because of good corrosion resistance with excellent combination of toughness and strength conferred by a presence of ferrite and austenite. These two phases have different plastic deformation and recrystallization mechanisms, where fcc austenite has very low stacking fault energy (SFE) and less slip systems and bcc ferrite show higher SFE and more slip systems. This distinct behavior deeply influences their mechanical, corrosive and welding properties.
