25-Year Study of EOT Crane Hoist Wire Rope Drum Failures

The dictionary defines failure as "being unable to do or become what is wanted, expected, or attempted." In this study this means the specific reason why the hoist drum assembly was replaced. The goal is when failures did occur, "accurate definition of the root cause was considered an absolute prerequisite to the prevention of future failure events." The plant commonly defined a crane hoist assembly failure mode as the specific area of what caused the assembly to be replaced. The plant crane maintenance department was motivated by the need to continuously improve year after year.
