High-Speed Casting: A New Concept in Billet Shape for Rebar Production

The strong competition in worldwide rebar production requires coming up with new solutions for the process, aiming to reduce operational costs (OpEx) at high productivity, while maintaining, or even strengthening, operative robustness.In the past twenty years Danieji has developed multiple approaches to high-speed casting that has led to Ml.DA.~(TM) endless rolling, aiming to comply with specific market demands through tailor-made solutions applied to the process, layout and equipment. Originally designed for a 300 k!/y production rate. MLDA. technology can now reach 500 kt/y production on a single-strand caster and, at present, we are aiming to go beyond this point, but always keeping in mind that an increase in productivity' must go hand in hand with low investment costs (CapEx).This paper deals with the development of a new concept in billet shape, while aiming for this target. To enhance productivity by a well-proven technology, we applied this shape to the Danieli Power Mould?. This solution was subjected to a long-term trial on a continuous casting machine for rebar, coupled to a rolling mill. The first significant results of these trials, described below, show that this new shape may be a feasible way to improve high-speed casting in MLDA~(TM) plants.
