Economic and Operating Benefits of the Hatch CRISP Process - A Logical Innovation in Electric Steelmaking

CRISP, the novel Continuous Reduced Iron Steelmaking Process developed by Hatch has been described previously (1,2,3,4). This paper focuses on the compelling economic case for this new steelmaking technology. The internal rate of return (IRR) of a sample CRISP project, estimated at 17%, is superior to conventional EAF projects. The attractive economic feasibility is derived from operating benefits and improved steelmaking operations as well as reduced capital costs per annual tonne of capacity.
