New Pulverized Coal Injection System at the Blast Furnaces of Salzgitter Flachstahl, Germany

At the beginning of 2015, a new Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) system has been commissioned at Salzgitter, supplying pulverized coal (PC) to Salzgitter Flachstahl No. A and No. B Blast Furnaces. In this paper, the technical and economic reasons for implementing PCI are explained. The features of the PCI system, including two self-inert grinding and drying plants with vertical roller mills, and two PCI plants with high-accuracy pulverized coal distribution control and minimized transport gas input into the Blast Furnaces, are described. The effect of injection on the overall blast furnace process is described and some results during the ramp up and the performance tests are also presented.
