The pass scheduling and shape target progression in cold rolling are inherently coupled. In multi-pass scenarios, the design of each pass' multivariable operating point is a carefully orchestrated group of settings that achieve the rolling objectives (e.g., reduction, shape, production throughput, etc.) within the capacity of the mill and shape actuation equipment. A new design method unifies longitudinal and transverse reactions in a spatial curvature framework that is independent of mill arrangement. This approach provides an immediate indication of success, and if not, directions and amplitudes of corrective adjustment to the pass schedule, shape target and mill's mechanical crown (set-up).
