Production of High-End Steels With the 150 t RH Facility at Big River Steel

The new flex mill of BRS decided to realize an unusual concept by using a RH type degasser in the production line of a flat-product mini-mill. This decision is based on the fact that a key product of BRS will be all kinds of electric sheets including NO grades which require ultra-low carbon contents. To achieve this in a reliable and reproducible manner a RH degasser of single fast vessel exchange design was selected as the vacuum unit. The RH degasser works in close co-operation with a Ladle Furnace. The hot commissioning and production results regarding removal of hydrogen, nitrogen and carbon as well as the design features of the new RH unit are described and displayed in this report.
