Current regulatory standards set strict parameters to satisfy safety requirements in complex plants such as rolling mill ones. SIME S.r.l. is specialized in the electric, automation & process control systems for the iron & steel sector, as well as in delivering safety level aligned with the system complexity through a structured process of risk analysis, design and implementation. This paper describes how the company achieved a Performance Level d according to EN ISO 13849-1, equivalent to Safety Integrity Level 2 of IEC/EN 62061, required at OFFICINE TECNOSIDER S.r.l., a 300.000 t/y plate rolling mill (Italy). SIME S.r.l. adopted adequate electro-mechanical solutions, power electronic devices, field sensors, standard and safety PLC (AllenBradley ControlLogix and GuardLogix) with the related distributed I/O system.
