Using experiments of water/oil interfaces, red dye injections and PIV measurements the formation of vortex flow in a tundish equipped with a turbulent inhibitor and pair of dams was studied and the following conclusions from the experimental results can be drawn: 1. Vortex formation is directly related to highly turbulent flows with large changes of velocity fields during short times. 2. Unstable turbulence makes downstream liquid to flow unbalanced originating rotating strain stresses that give origin to vortex onset. 3. Large distances between the upper edge of the dam and the free surface of the bath enhance formations of vortex flows. 4. Increasing tundish capacity does not ensure steel cleanliness through long residence times if the dam height is not adjusted to the new level of liquid in the tundish. 5. Higher downstream velocities annihilate rotating strain rates avoiding vortex onset.
