In this paper, we propose a meta-level active multidatabase system architecture that provides a fundamental framework for retrieving, modeling and integrating various kinds of multimedia data. The aim of our research is to evolve the current passive multidatahase infrastructure into the active infrastructure, that allows the automatic and meaningful delivery of information that matches user requirements. The system provides active database functionalities and integrated media modelling framework over heterogeneous multimedia information resources. Our system architecture consists of three layers that comprises an aspect-oriented media modelling framework: 1) bottom-layer: a data access layer for accessing and retrieving heterogeneous information resources, 2) intermediate-layer: an aspect extraction layer for creating the metadata for meta-level computation and 3) top-layer: a relationship evaluation layer for dynamically computing correlations among the extracted features. By the 3-tier architecture, users can incorporate a wide variety of legacy information systems and data integration technologies into the active multidatabase environment without modification of the system. Our system applies the active database functionalities with multimedia retrieval methods to heterogeneous information resources to access and integrate them in a dynamic way. In this paper, we clarify feasibility and effectiveness of our system architecture by showing several experimental results.
