The parameters involved in the transmission of digital television have now become too numerous to list. The secret of maintaining reliable, high quality services over the different distribution, compression and transmission systems, is to focus on those factors that are most critical. With the addition of new challenges and compression technologies like MPEG4, H.264/AVC, VC-1 and WMV9, MPEG test & monitoring systems must be equipped to ensure safe delivery of these new services with high integrity and good quality. With the added complexity, substantial new engineering issues become critical: 1. Standards-compliance must be good: to ensure the equipment interoperates with that of other vendors, so that the video will play properly for the consumer 2. Visual quality: getting the best quality out of the available bandwidth 3. Real-time performance: making it all work in real-time without expensive decoders. Different strategies for monitoring these critical parameters are described, and especially how to achieve cost-effective results by applying the correct tests & equipment to appropriate points within the distribution chain. This approach, using appropriate test and analysis tools, can make the development and implementation of these new compression standards a far easier and quicker process, minimizing costs and maximizing revenues.
