Preforms of various ceramic materials were infiltrated with a commercial magnesium alloy (AZ91D) in a squeeze cast press, machined into tensile bars, and then tested. These results were compared to tensile bars machined from specimens cast by a pressureless infiltration (PLI) method and the PI VAC (pressure infiltrated, vacuum assisted casting) method into the same types of preforms. The mechanical properties of the PLI and PIVAC methods are comparable to the corresponding squeeze cast specimens. The effects of the process parameters are discussed with special attention given to the casting environment's influence on the mechanical properties.
