A historical overview of pathogen introductions and their transboundary spread in Asia

This paper briefly reviews the history of some of the major transboundary aquatic animal diseases in the Asia-Pacific Region and summarizes the status of some of the major diseases currently affecting the region (primarily those diseases listed by theOffice International des Epizootics (OIE) or included in the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA)/Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)/OIE Quarterly Aquatic Animal Disease Reporting System). Emphasis is placed on those diseases having wide distributions and impacts in the region, with less attention paid to diseases of cold-water species such as salmonids, and those of very limited distribution. Some emerging diseases that could have significant impacts on aquaculture in the region in the near future are also discussed.
