Multiport, Asymmetric Fixture Characterization by Custom Calibration Kit

A classic problem with fixture removal is reference plane positioning and lack of commercial calibration kits for the desired connections. Often, Automatic Fixture Removal techniques or similar techniques have trouble with asymmetric fixtures. A classic solution is to design a custom TRL, SOLT, 2Xthru or other type of calibration kit, but most designers feel this is a lot of hassle, since the standards have to be characterized and known. The author presents examples and techniques for characterizing coupled circuit board and cabled test fixtures by custom calibration kit, showing that it doesn't have to be as hard as it looks.
