The damage of production tempered and laminated side glazing in automobile rollover collisions is analyzed. Glazing crashworthiness is investigated, and it is shown that the glass performance is directly dependent upon the choice of mounts and the framing of the periphery. The concepts of deterministic and stochastic factors of safety are given, and it is shown that in rollovers, the safety factor is generally less than unity for tempered glazing. The legal aspects of automotive glazing are briefly reviewed, along with historical trends in side glass material selection. The analysis is supplemented with examples from actual rollovers and the results of experiments.
