White Portland cement (WPC) enjoys only a small share of the global market for Portland cement. WPC's low alkalinity, which reduces the risk of alkali-aggregate reaction, and low content of iron, which reduces the capillary porosity in the hydrated paste (i.e. enhancing strength), are truly desired properties that increase the demand for this specialised product. An unjustified barrier hindering the use of WPC concrete in aggressive environments is the perception among decision-makers that white concrete is less durable than grey, both physically and aesthetically. In order to overcome this obstacle, extensive studies were commenced at the AALBORG WHITE~R Research and Development Centre to attain proper know-how and documentation of the durability related properties of white Portland cement. The paper summarizes the findings so-far and proves the long-term durability of WPC.
