AN INVESTIGATION OF SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS IN A UK WATER UTILITY COMPANY

An investigation of slips, trips and falls (STFs) was carried out in the sewage treatment group of a UK Water Utility company. The main aims of the study were to establish the causal factors for STFs and to provide recommendations to reduce their occurrence. Data was collected from the analysis of STF accident records (n = 226), from site observations (n = 33) and from Operator observations and interviews (n = 13). The main causes of falls were identified as poor grounds maintenance, poor housekeeping and adverse weather. Recommendations were targeted at these areas and included both practical and organisational interventions.
