Trade Metrology requirements for a suitable measuring instrument: Implications for suppliers and users for trade measurements and prepacking.

Up until now Trade Metrology Act technical requirements for the suitability of instruments for trade use and requirements for approval and verification have been vague and placed in various sections of the Regulations. Two new standards (SANS 289 and SANS 458) which cover the accuracy of trade measurements and give requirements regarding the suitability of measuring instruments, have recently been published and will shortly replace existing Regulations covering these issues. The paper will give an overview of the new requirements for suitable instruments and certain exemptions from type approval and verification when used by packers other than in the retail. Differences from current requirements will be highlighted to give an idea of changes that will be implemented.
