A simple application of the principles of method validation and the requirements for measurement traceability and uncertainty estimation is discussed. The philosophy set out in the following documents was incorporated into the study: EURACHEM/CITAC Guide to Quantifying Uncertainty in Analytical Measurement, 2~(nd) Ed (2000) and the EURACHEM/CITAC Guide to Traceability in Chemical Measurement (2003). Uncertainty calculations were performed in accordance with the principles set out in the ISO GUM (1993) -^sGuide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. The principles are applied to a new method for the analysis of trace gas impurities in nitrogen using the technique of gas analysis by gas chromatography with the pulsed discharge helium ionisation detector (PDHID).
