ESTIMATION OF FINE AND COARSE AEROSOLS FROM MERIS/ECMWF DATA

Within the German MERIS-MAPP [1] project we suggested an algorithm [2] to relate aerosol path radiance to aerosol optical depth of FINE and COARSE aerosols regularly from MERIS/ECMWF data, applicable for case I as well as case II waters. The basic aerosol assumptions and basic equation of the algorithm are described shortly here. Examples of applications of the algorithm in German coastal areas are presented. The algorithm shows good separation of FINE and COARSE aerosols. The inversion also shows that areas with high level of suspended matter can be detected from MERIS NIR data at an accuracy that the masking affects due to suspended matter on aerosol parameter estimation in case II waters and coastal areas are reliable eliminated. Recommendations for possible further data inversion improvements are given.
