Recent Advances in the CSIR-NML Time and Frequency Laboratory

The CSIR-NML Time and Frequency laboratory is primarily responsible for the maintenance of the SI second. It also carries the responsibility for a number of other measurement standards, such as phase angle, fast electrical pulse characterisation, and phase noise. In addition the laboratory is also responsible for measurements performed in fibre optics, and these include attenuation, wavelength and optical delay. The laboratory is accredited for most of the services it provides to clients. The laboratory is currently involved in the development of stabilised laser systems at 780 nm and 1550 nm for use in the calibration of Optical Spectrum Analysers. An optical frequency comb facility is planned for the laboratory, and a research project that will lead to an optical frequency standard is envisaged for the future. A GPS time transfer receiver was developed at the CSIR-NML in the late 1990's, and is currently being redeveloped. The new receiver will feature 12 channels, and the development work will include a time interval counter. The receiver will be used in a regional timing network that will include all the current member countries of the Southern African Development Community. In addition to the projects mentioned above, the laboratory is also in the process of upgrading its computer systems.
