In iron and steel industries, the large scale of computer systems that has greatly contributed to keep the high productivity and material yields has been developed and has been improved. As orders get the grade higher and the lot size smaller, the system which solves production lot arrangement problems in heavy steel plate, is need much resources of computer. Under this environment, we developed the system which was applied genetic algorithm to a complex combinatorial problem, what is called "slab design problem" in heavy steel plate, and the system has worked since 1995. But, for the changes of environment after that, the system needed to be improved. Therefore, we have improved the system for being practical use. The system has been working now, and has been keeping the high productivity and material yields.
