In the last few years, cellular metals, particularly aluminum foams, have opened a wide field of possibilities due to the combination of low weight and interesting mechanical and structural properties. Specially, the use of closed cell aluminum foams as energy absorbers has been deeply studied and recently implemented in several applications. In this work, the design and construction of an energy absorber based on aluminum foams is presented. For this purpose, several aluminum foams were produced using the powder metallurgical route, and compression tests were performed in order to study the energy absorption of these materials. Finally, taking into account the previous results, the density and geometry of the foam were selected to reach the specifications required, and the final prototype was built.
