Traditionally, Thermography (using thermal imaging cameras) has been carried out to locate hot-spots. Overheating equipment, bearing wear, loose or oxidised electrical joints and more. This is better than not knowing about them (danger to people, fires, production downtime) but not as good as finding the risk at the earliest possible stage. Issues can then be monitored to ensure no false alarms, to allow reductions in demand temporarily and to allow planned maintenance. This paper discusses the important aspects of thermography and IR spot thermometers, and how a regular "routing" of equipment can save time and money.
