The term nanocomposite as applied to polymer-based materials has come to signify those based on clay particles, mainly of the montmorillonite type, exfoliated in mixtures with low viscosity precursors which are subsequently polymerized in situ. The montmorillonite clay consists of silicate layers.By modifying the clay appropriately, usually by treating the clay layers with a long-chain surfactant having a primary ammonium ion at one end and a carboxy lic acid group on the other, cations on the surface of the clay layers (usually Na~+, K~+, Mg~+2, Ca~+2) can be replaced by the quaternary ammonium ions. This allows monomers such as e-caprolactam to penetrate and swell the clay layer.
