摘要

Georgia Power, the largest of five electric utilities that make up The Southern Company, has been providing electricity to Georgia for more than a century, serving 2 million customers in 57,000 of the state's 59,000 square miles. To maintain strict high operational and customer satisfaction standards, Georgia Power is constantly looking for ways to be more operationally efficient without impacting its customers. Recently, Georgia Power undertook an initiative to more effectively utilize its GIS while reducing its maintenance and support cost. A team was formed to look at the benefits of leveraging a Southern Company Enterprise GIS. For Georgia Power Distribution, this meant the potential of having to migrate to a new GIS platform. This paper will highlight the approach GPC took to address the challenges of data migration and the lessons learned as the team undertook a Pilot project to assess the overall impact and benefits such a move would have on day-to-day business. The paper will discuss issues related to data conversion, data quality, enterprise data model compatibility, and the overall impact on other systems dependent on the GIS.
