Property Comparisons of Phenolic Resin Systems for Pultrusion

Recent advances in phenolic novolac resins have added exceptional pultrusion processing performance to the already well known list of phenolic resin performance properties, including excellent fire, smoke, and smoke toxicity (FST) profile; retention of properties after long-term exposure to high temperatures; excellent electrical resistance; and excellent chemical resistance, especially in chlorinated solvents. However, a good understanding of the basic physical and mechanical characteristics of these resins is needed to obtain optimal product performance. This paper will compare and contrast three phenolic resin systems and discuss differences observed in the mechanical property performance as characterized by 3-point flexural testing, shortbeam, tensile fracture toughness, tensile, compression and Izod impact testing. These differences will also be related to the void content of the various phenolic resin chemistries.
