Bridge decks capped with Portland cement concrete (PCC) are deteriorating at record numbers due to chloride salts and water penetrating this porous surfacing material. Removal of the deteriorated Portland cement deck and its replacement reduces traffic flow while each lane is taken out of service for repair and in heavily traveled, urban areas this reduction in traffic flow is unacceptable The solution to this problem is to coat the bridges with a polymer that will seal the deck preventing the corrosive elements from reaching the steel reinforcement, thereby lengthening the life of our bridges. This paper describes why polyester polymer concrete bridge deck overlays should be considered, including the preparation of the surface and application of primer and the polyester polymer concrete (PPC).
