Many companies have network resources and information spread out across multiple networks in different locations. What companies desire is a way to maintain fast, secure and reliable communications wherever their offices are located. This has typically meant the use of leased lines in providing a company with a way to expand its private network beyond its immediate geographic area. Leased lines have obvious advantages over the Internet in terms of reliability, performance and security. However, leased lines can become quite expensive and the cost can increase significantly as the distance between the offices increases. Now, many companies are creating their own VPN (virtual private network) via the Internet to accommodate the needs of remote employees and distant offices. This paper covers a step-by-step illustration of an actual implementation of a VPN.
