This project represents the first in-depth investigation of the emerging role of the CIO. The management of information technology relates directly to an organization's bottom line. Thus, rather than simply supervising the information technology function, the CIO is expected to understand the business and to work towards ensuring information technology supports those initiatives that contribute to establishing and maintaining the firm's competitive advantage. The role of the CIO is to ensure appropriate activities are carried out. Research participants will be asked to recount their personal experiences, based upon a chronological sequence of events. The research participants will be asked to provide their interpretation of the issues that have been dealt with and those they anticipate will have to be addressed in the foreseeable future. The results of this research project will provide a more thorough understanding of this role.
