Electromagnetic radiation, via decomposition of photo-labile NO-derivates in the skin, significantly improves systemic cardiovascular parameters (Figure 1) like blood pressure or blood flow.In human skin nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-dependent production of nitric oxide can be indirectly detected in the form of nitroso compounds (RNO) and of the oxidation products nitrite and nitrate. The nitrite anion undergoes photodecom-position when irradiated with UVA-Ught resulting in the formation of bioactive NO (1). The NO radical may also result in the production of the more stable nitroso-thiol products (RSNO) which were shown to be responsible for some of the well-documented cardiovascular processes that had been previously attributed to NO itself. We here for the first time give evidence that UVA-light-induced non-enzymatic NO formation within the human skin significantly improves systemic cardiovascular parameters.
