Friction Characteristics of Industrial Drum Brake Linings

Spring applied, electrically released drum brakes are used as safety brakes to secure the hoisting gear of industrial cranes. In case of failure of the hoist motor, these brakes should prevent the lifted load from falling down. Normal procedure is then to use a back-up circuit with manual control to open and close the brake repeatedly, lowering the load in discrete steps until it is safely on the ground. During this procedure, the drum brake lining should be able to keep its initial frictional properties under high fluctuating mechanical and thermal loading conditions.
