Nucleation of low aspect-ratio beta_1' precipitates at twin boundaries in a Mg-Zn-Y alloy

摘要

Precipitation of the beta_1' (Mg_4Zn_7) intermetallic phase in an isothermally aged Mg-Zn-Y alloy has been modified through controlled pre-ageing deformation. This phase is regarded as the principle strengthening phase in peak-aged Mg-Zn alloys, where it commonly precipitates as fine rods parallel to the hexagonal axis of the matrix.
