Much research has been conducted for grain refinement and subsequent mechanical property improvement in face centered cubic (fcc) metals using High-Pressure Torsion (HPT). However, little has been reported about body centered cubic (bcc) metals. For bcc metals, it is very difficult to produce bulk forms of ultrafine grained microstructure of bcc refractory transition metals because they are generally hard and brittle. Therefore, this research investigates microstructures and mechanical properties of bcc metals, such as Cr and Nb, using HPT.
