Optical techniques have been for a long time important tools of metrology and industrial quality control. To day this impact of optics in industrial process has increased due to the developments both in the optical fields and in methodology of signal analysis. This paper is devoted to study the deep connection that exists between the two aspects of optics applied to the measure of deformations, and to determination of shape and dimensions. Both areas have a common mathematical structure and also their experimental realization has very many similar procedures. Further, the decoding of the information displayed in fringe patterns common to the two fields of application of optical techniques depends on the process of phase unwrapping. Phase unwrapping procedures in turn are heavily influenced by the source of the evaluated fringe patterns. The more challenging problems are encountered in the contouring application.
