Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Electroactive Aniline Trimer-Containing Organosilane Materials

Great interests have been shown in general area of sol-gel chemistry in the past decade, especially inorganic-organic hybrid materials because of their versatile applications in catalysis, chemical separation technology and biosensor, etc. All of those applications can be attributed to their unique capability of combining properties from both inorganic glasses and organic polymers. On the other hand, as an analogue of well-known conducting polymer polyaniline, aniline oligomers are studied to be flexible and useful with well-defined structure and electroactivity. Therefore, we are interested in covalently incorporating electroactive moieties into silica and other metal oxide networks. In this paper, we present a successful and high-yield synthesis of a novel aniline trimer-silane compound, N,N’-bis(4’-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl-ureido)phenyl)-1,4-quinonenediimine (TSUPQD) with detailed characterization using a variety of spectroscopic methods. The compound was employed as precursor in sol-gel reactions with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) to yield new electroactive organic-inorganic hybrid materials (Figure 1).
