Bechtel has constructed grass-root facilities at various remote locations worldwide. As part of the technology initiative, Bechtel Oil, Gas and Chemicals (Bechtel) has developed a Virtual Plant Simulator (VPS) for testing design changes, improving operator training and conducting de-bottlenecking studies.Typically the model development for the VPS is started in the Front End Design Stage where the basic design package is being established. Typical applications include driver selection and or process studies that require validating the basic design and control strategies. For example, one grass roots facility required a single fixed speed driver for two refrigeration services. The licensor and the owner/operator wanted to ensure safety and reliability. A dynamic model was developed to validate the turbine and helper motor configuration. In addition, a new control strategy was implemented to increase reliability.
