The Savannah River Site uses crossflow filtration to remove entrained sludge (i.e., metal oxides and hydroxides) and monosodium titanate from high level radioactive waste streams. The low filter flux (0.02 gpm/ft2) limits the throughput of two proposed facilities. The authors identified the rotary microfilter as a technology that could significantly increase filter flux, with improvements of as much as 10X. Current efforts include evaluating and developing the rotary microfilter for radioactive service at SRS.
