This study addresses gas generation, retention (hold-up) and release in pulse jet mixed non-Newtonian slurries. The technical basis for scale-up of gas retention and release behavior is addressed. A theoretical model for uniform gas generation in a well-mixed system is developed. Dimensional analysis is used to identify the important non-dimensional parameters affecting gas hold-up and release behavior. Gas hold-up and release tests are conducted at three physical scales- full scale, 1/4 scale, and 1/9 scale. Experiments are conducted with two non-Newtonian simulants. Gas generation is achieved through the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The data are compared non-dimensionally and the important scale laws are confirmed. This work supports the design and operation of pulse jet mixing systems used to process high level radioactive waste slurries at the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant.
